Understanding clinical research
Clinical trials are research studies involving volunteers that help researchers evaluate investigational treatments and learn more about health conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Every clinical trial follows a specific research plan, called a protocol, that outlines how the study will be conducted, who may be eligible to participate, and what will happen throughout the study. Studies are also reviewed by an Institutional Review Board (IRB), an independent group that helps protect the rights and welfare of research participants.
Throughout a study, participants are monitored by trained medical and research professionals according to the study protocol. Before you decide to participate, our team will explain the study’s purpose, procedures, potential risks and benefits, and other important information so you understand what participation may involve.
Participation in clinical research is always voluntary. You will have the opportunity to ask questions before deciding whether taking part is right for you.
What to expect during
a clinical trial
Every clinical trial is different, but participation may include the steps listed here.
Before you decide to participate, our team will explain what a specific study requires, including the expected visit schedule and study procedures.
- Meeting with our research team and study physician.
- Reviewing the study and completing the informed consent process.
- Health assessments, laboratory testing, or other study-related procedures.
- Receiving an investigational treatment or other study intervention, depending on the study.
- Attending scheduled study visits and completing follow-up assessments.
- Staying in communication with our research team throughout the study.
What happens when
you contact us?
Reaching out does not mean you are committing to participate in a clinical trial. It simply starts a conversation.
See current research opportunities-
We talk with you about your experience
Our team will talk with you about your experience with IBD, answer your questions, and discuss research opportunities that may be available.
-
We may ask about your medical history
We may ask about your diagnosis, symptoms, medical history, and current or previous treatments to help identify studies that may be appropriate to explore.
-
We explain the next steps
If there is a potential research opportunity, we will explain the next steps and provide additional information about the screening process. Eligibility is based on the requirements of each individual study, and contacting BVL Research does not guarantee eligibility or enrollment.
A personal approach to research
We know your time matters. BVL Research strives to provide an individualized experience with clear communication, personalized scheduling, and dedicated time with our research team.
Family members, friends, and caregivers are welcome to provide support during visits. Depending on the study, assistance with transportation, meals, lodging, mileage, or other participation-related needs may also be available.
“Midwest Values Bring Big City Solutions.”
Participation in clinical research is always voluntary.
Not sure if research is right for you?
You do not need to know whether you qualify before contacting us. If you are living with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis and are curious about clinical research, our team is here to answer your questions and help you understand what options may be available. Learning more does not obligate you to participate.
